1.
WHY INSPIRED ACTION?
Even
mistakes lead to blessings.
Early this
morning inspiration visited while I was reading the December
edition of "O" magazine in an article by one of my favorite
authors Roger Housden, titled "The Pleasure of Not Being
Perfect." Housden says,
"And can we ever be sure that
mistakes are really mistakes? We can never fully know the true
outcome of any course of action....Any apparent wrong turn can
have surprising and joyful consequences that we could never have
foretold. The point is, we just never know where our blessings
will come from or how life will turn out."
I don't advocate making
mistakes on purpose, but when inspiration calls you to action
and you wonder if it might be a mistake, consider this:
Inspiration is Life calling you to move closer to your purpose
and dreams. By taking immediate action you strengthen
your confidence, decision-making, and risk-taking skills, which
are key to living an inspired life on a day-to-day basis. Your
inspired action also sends a wake-up call to Life and keeps It
moving in your direction.
Last Spring I put into action a huge
personal decision, some of which you'll read about in my update
below. At first I wondered if I'd be making a mistake because my
choice was so radical for me (and really freaked out some of my
family and friends). At times, I've felt an inkling of what
might go through the minds of people who are homeless but now
that it's six months later, I can say it wasn't a mistake
and even if it was in the eyes of others, it's one of the best I've ever made because
the blessings that arrived with it have far outweighed the
challenges.
It's easy to forget when you're
under the stress of being afraid to act for fear of making a
mistake (in effect doubling your fear) that
inspiration is your Inner Guide leading the way toward what you
want AND what is best for you (what you want is
not always what's best for you - inspiration marries the two).
The more inspired action you take, the sooner you will be living
your dreams and living every day with more purpose, joy, and
inspiring results.
What was one of the most
inspired actions you took in 2005 and what lessons did you learn
and blessings have you
received?

“Fulfilling my dream
of sailing the Channel solo has meant the world to me,
and I really hope that I have inspired other people to
follow theirs too." ~ Hilary Lister, World Record Quadriplegic Sailor
2.
INSPIRED SPIRIT AWARD
I'm
starting something new.
The
"Inspired Spirit" Award, which honors a person who takes
inspired action to live their dreams.
This issue the award goes to Hilary Lister.
Some people may have thought that
quadriplegic Hilary Lister, age 33, was making a mistake when
she decided she wanted to sail solo across the English Channel
this past August. In fact, she wondered too.
Imagine
being strapped down, unable to move, in a 26-foot sailboat for
six hours on a windy sea in shipping traffic lanes with just the power of your breath blowing into and
sucking out of two straws to keep your boat upright and moving
in the right direction. Unbelievable! Doable! Done!
Hilary's courage and
determination inspire and humble me, who fears for my life at
the least bit of wave action when I'm sailing.
What's even more amazing to me is how Hilary came
to this decision. She had considered ending her life because of
the unbearable pain and loss of mobility until, as she is quoted in CNN
online, "A neighbor
told me about Westbere in Kent, where they take disabled people
sailing. I wanted to do it immediately and the experience really
has changed my life. When I first announced that I was planning
to sail across the Channel, I had no idea whether it was
manageable or not, but I was frustrated that everyone around me
was learning to sail and I was still a passenger. It wasn't easy
to convince people it could be done, but my family and friends
were just pleased to see me excited about something again."
Inspiration visited Hilary that day her neighbor
mentioned sailing and Hilary took action. Inspired Action. Now,
two years later, a decision that many considered a mistake, led
to blessings for Hilary and the world:
Hilary now holds the world
record for the longest solo voyage by a quadriplegic sailor and
has reclaimed her life and her future. We are blessed to know
again that when we take inspired action, Life rushes in like a
surging ocean at high tide and fills us with everything we need
to live our dreams now.
Action Step:
Notice what inspires you today
and immediately after noticing it, ask yourself,
"What action am I
inspired to take right now?" Then do something, even
it's it just one small step, that honors your gift of
inspiration and watch for blessings. They are on their way!
I love hearing from you. If
you're inspired to share what has inspired you and the lessons
and blessings you've discovered, email me at
mary@marymarcdante.com.
The first five people to answer will receive a fr*ee
downloadable copy of my new Living with Enthusiasm
e-book. (Your email address and anything you send is considered confidential unless I ask for
your permission to share it in a future e-news and you give me
your permission.)

When you're
contemplating whether a decision could be a mistake or lead to
inspired action, answer these
questions:
* If I take this action, what's
the worst that could happen? Can I live with it?
* If I take this action, what good things could
happen? Would these outcomes bring me and others more joy?
* If I don't take this action, what's the worst that could happen? Can I live with it?
* If I don't take this action, what's the best that could happen? Will this bring me
and others more joy?
* Could I turn this into an experiment and commit to doing it for 24 hours? A week? A month? A year? A lifetime?

Have a question about how to stay
inspired? Email me at
mary@marymarcdante.com
How do I stay inspired after I've made a mistake?
Having had my share of practice in
turning back on the faucet of inspiration after making a mistake
(most recently taking an online driving refresher course for
speeding), here are some practical and spiritual actions you'll
find most beneficial in getting your creative life energy flowing again.
Mistakes come in all sizes. The Mistake Recovery Plan I'm
suggesting below isn't necessary for the misspellings you make,
the wrong numbers you dial, or when you've forgotten someone's
name. Common mistakes that most people make at one time or
another call for a sense of humor, self-acceptance, and paying
closer attention to what you're doing in the moment.
The steps I'm offering below are for mistakes that make you wish
you had another name, the ones that negatively affect others or
yourself, intentionally or unintentionally, the mistakes that
make you want to hide and avoid others yet require that you step
up and take action to correct the situation as quickly as
possible.
-
As
soon as you recognize you've made a mistake, acknowledge the
mistake to yourself in the mirror and say, "I made this mistake.
I take full responsibility for what has happened and ask for
inspiration and guidance in rectifying it in whatever way I
can." Owning this will do wonders for your Spirit, releasing
guilt, reconnecting with inspiration, and taking inspired
action.
-
Write out "just the facts, ma'am" of what happened and who else
was involved. (Leave out opinions, blaming, and how you feel
about it for now.) This will clarify your thinking.
-
Decide what actions you will take to correct the mistake and add
that to your written Mistake Recovery Plan. Include:
- Who has been adversely affected by this?
- How will I tell those who have been affected and what will I
say?
- Who do I need to apologize to?
- What three actions can I take right now that will make the
biggest positive difference in correcting this mistake?
- What else can I do to make things better?
- What will I do to keep myself positive and focused on my
strengths and what I can do, not what I've screwed up?
-
Create a plan for what
you will do to make sure the mistake doesn't happen again and
add it to your Mistake Recovery Plan.
-
Contact at least two trusted mentors or people whom you respect
and ask for their support.
This is not the time to hide or turn to people who can't help
you make it better. The bigger the mistake, the more wisdom you
need. Share your mistake and recovery
plan.
Ask for positive constructive feedback from them on how you've
handled the situation and what else you could do to make things
better.
-
Revisit your plan and adjust it following your conversations
with these trusted people and with your Inspired Self.
-
Act on your plan;
knowledge without action can lead to more mistakes. Knowledge
with action builds leadership. -
Tell everyone who could be affected by the mistake what happened,
what you are doing about it, and how you will prevent it from
happening in the future. - Remember to apologize, show remorse, ask for their
forgiveness, and thank them for their understanding and patience
as you rectify the situation.
-
After you have taken corrective action, take a deep breath and
reflect. Consciously ask yourself how you feel about this
mistake and
feel it.
(The body can only release what is felt.) Say to yourself in the mirror: "I forgive you for
this mistake and know you did what you thought was best in the
moment. I still love you and believe in you and will help you
make better choices in the future." Even if you don't feel
this way, say it anyway, and make eye contact with yourself.
Your Spirit needs to be released and this will help.
-
Look for the
lessons and blessings. Write down at least three things you've
learned to do differently and three blessings. (If they haven't
shown up yet, keep looking; they're waiting for you to notice.)
-
Move on. The past is over. The future
is in front of you.
All you have is now and the actions you take
in this moment. When old issues come up, acknowledge them
quickly and shift your focus to what you learned and the
positive action you're taking as a result of what you learned.
Remember the law of 17 seconds! Whatever you think or talk
about, negative or positive, for 17 seconds, gets reinforced.
Share what you've learned with someone else. You never know who
and how it will help someone in the future.
If
someone you care about at home or work makes a mistake, turn the
above into questions and walk them through the process.
"We
do not so much need the help of our friends
as the confidence of their help in need."
~ Epicurus
-
What is your perception of the mistake you made and what
responsibility did you have in making it?
-
What are the facts? Have you written them down yet? If not, when
will you?
-
What actions will you take to correct the mistake?
- Who has been adversely affected by this?
- How will you tell those who have been affected and what will
you say?
- Who do you need to apologize to?
- What three actions can you take right now that will make the
biggest positive difference in correcting this mistake?
- What else can you do to make things better?
- What will you do to keep yourself positive and focused on your
strengths and what you can do?
-
What plan do you have to make sure the mistake doesn't happen
again? Have you written it down? If not, when will you have it
completed?
-
What two trusted mentors or people whom you respect will you
contact to ask for feedback and support in reviewing your
recovery plan, resolving this mistake and moving forward?
-
Have you revisited your plan and adjusted it following your conversations
with these trusted people and with your Inspired Self?
-
How have you acted on your plan?
- Have you told everyone who could be affected by the mistake what happened,
what you are doing about it, and how you will prevent it from
happening in the future?
- Have you remembered to apologize, show remorse, ask for their
forgiveness, and thank them for their understanding and patience
as you rectify the situation.
-
How do you feel about this mistake now that you've taken
positive action to correct it? Are you willing to forgive
yourself and and say
to yourself in the mirror: "I forgive you for this mistake and
know you did what you thought was best in the moment. I still
love you and believe in you and will help you make better
choices in the future."
-
What are three things you've learned to do differently and three
blessings you gained as a result of this mistake and taking
action to rectify it? Have you written them down?
-
What are you doing to allow yourself to let go of this mistake
and keep the river of inspiration flowing in your life now?

thoughts about making and recovering from mistakes? Would you like

MM UPDATE
It's been a wild six month
adventure since I made the decision to experiment with blue-water
cruising on a 37-foot sailboat with my sweetheart and sailing
Captain, John Kalpus aka Dr. Discovery. I gave up my beautiful
canyon view apartment, sold most of what I owned, moved what
remained into storage except for the clothes I could carry in two duffel bags, and created a virtual office with my
cell phone, laptop and wireless internet card. In between speaking
engagements and visiting friends and family this summer and fall I
spent my time floating, working on, and working from sailing vessel
"Prudence" at California Yacht Marina in
Chula Vista Harbor, enjoying the marina community
and sailing to and from Catalina Island.
The lessons have been fast and
furious including the importance of choosing to look for what
inspires you when you're feeling afraid and remembering that you
have many more resources available to you to live your dreams than you can see in front
of you. For an audio excerpt of one
moment of truth,
The blessings have been wondrous
including sailing with dolphins under a moonlit starry night, facing
my fear of being in rough weather on the ocean and living through
it, and the gratitude I feel for terra firma, and simple things like a good night's sleep
and my pillow. With winter here, I've planted myself back on land in
San Diego and look forward to what will be birthed in the wake of this experience.
What about you? Is there an
adventure you've been on in the past six months that is transforming
your life and makes you wonder what's in store for you in the coming
months? Let me hear from you and let's see where it takes us in
future issues. Email me at

The March of the Penguins
And I thought Wisconsin winters were rough. Watching these Antarctic

FAVORITE
INSPIRED ACTION QUOTES
"One drop of
water helps to swell the ocean; a spark
of fire helps to give light to the world. None are
too small, too feeble, too poor to be of service.
Think of this and act. ~ Hannah More
"When
the extrinsic motivation of competition becomes the basis for our
motivation, it drives us away from self-knowledge and self-discovery.
This is what over-competitiveness shares with fear of failure. Both are
misplaced motivations, distracting our attention from the big dreams and
goals of self-actualization.
When we are worried about beating other people, we
can't focus on developing our own potential. We become outer-directed,
instead of inner-inspired.
Remember that all motivations arise from the same
source: the desire to be satisfied with yourself. Even fear of failure,
in its most basic form, masks a desire to feel good about ourselves -
competitiveness also derives from the need for self-esteem....
By focusing on positive, healthy motivations and
letting the more negative ones pass, you can purify the source of your
imaginative power. The longer you work on it, the easier it will be to
frame your motivation toward intrinsic and positive achievement." ~ Vic
Conant
"Talk is cheap.
It's what you do that determines the script of your life. Translate your
insights, understandings and awareness into purposeful, meaningful,
constructive actions. They are of no value until then. Measure yourself
and others based on results -- not intentions or words." ~ Dr. Phil
" Anyone
who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new."
~ Albert
Einstein

A Special Thank You
One of the most memorable experiences I had this year was speaking to
the Volunteers and Staff who work with Volunteers at Iowa Health Systems
in Des Moines. A special thank you to Director Nancy Shafer for the
amazing program and events she put into action for her team using the
Living with Enthusiasm book and guidebook.
Through Nancy's
leadership, she has taken volunteering to a new level by incorporating
the characteristics and strategies of enthusiasm into monthly staff
meetings, book clubs, volunteer recognition events, and a Celebration of
Life service where the minister read from Living with Enthusiasm
to honor a beloved volunteer Angie, who ran their pet therapy program.
Thank you Angie for your legacy of love and service. Thank you Nancy for
all the good you continue to do.
And a
special thank you to you too, for all the good you do.
Inspired by your presence,
